Frequently Asked Questions
At DCPEXPORT, we consider a DCP as close to a strip of film as it gets in the digital world. Each frame of your video track is encoded using the robust JPEG-2000 format, allowing every element of your film—picture, sound, subtitles, and more—to be stored separately in a structured folder. A Digital Cinema Server then uses these files to accurately project every aspect of your motion picture on the big screen, ensuring your film is seen exactly as you intended.
Digital Cinema Servers use a variant of Linux OS, and DCP hard drives are typically formatted in Linux EXT3. This means they won’t appear on a standard Mac or Windows desktop. To view the contents, you’ll need to access the drive on a Linux system or use third-party drivers compatible with your computer.
There are several third-party applications that allow you to play a DCP on your computer. However, most are expensive and aren’t suitable for accurately evaluating your film’s quality. The best way to experience your film is on a certified Digital Cinema system, where you can see it exactly as audiences will.
